In Katihar, on Wednesday, the police opened fire on the consumers protesting against the shutdown of electricity supply. Three people were seriously injured in the firing by the police, out of which one has died. Since then the atmosphere has become tense. Electricity consumers in Bihar have been plagued by frequent disconnection of recharges and disconnection of power supply due to glitches in smart meters. Angry people were protesting at the power sub-station in Barsoi to protest against the suspension of power supply. Due to non-receipt of satisfactory answer from the authorities, the crowd became furious, on which the police opened fire.
SDO denies firing
One person lost his life in the police firing on the protesters, while the condition of two is said to be serious. The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Khurshid, a resident of Chetna village. Barsoi SDO has confirmed the death of one and injuries to two people, but has denied the firing done by the police. The SDO said that there has been an incident of death and injury due to stone pelting by the mob.
‘Government of sticks and bullets in the state’
Leader of the Opposition Vijay Kumar Sinha reached Katihar on receiving information about firing on the protesters. BJP leader Vijay Kumar Sinha said that the government of sticks and bullets is running in the state. People protesting demanding electricity were fired upon. There should be a high level inquiry into this.
Male MLA demanded compensation
Male MLA from Balrampur Mahbub Alam said that the incident is unfortunate. The police should have acted with restraint. The people leading the protest should also have controlled the crowd. He said that one death and two injuries have been reported. Along with this, he demanded the government to give 20 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased.
