Thaawarchand Gehlot will be the new Governor of Karnataka, will take oath on July 11



Thaawarchand Gehlot will take oath as the 19th Governor of Karnataka on July 11. This information has been given by the state government on Friday. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the Glass House of Raj Bhavan at 10.30 am on July 11. In an officially given information by the State Information Department, it was told that Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Abhay Srinivas Oka will administer the oath to Gehlot as the new Governor.

Gehlot, 73, was the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment at the Centre. Apart from this, he has won consecutive elections from Dewas-Shajapur parliamentary constituency from 1996-97, 1998-99, 1999-2004 and from 2004 to 2009. After this he is a member of Rajya Sabha from 2012 till now. He was entrusted with the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. He has been the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha. Will now replace Vajubhai Vala who was the Governor of Karnataka since 2014. On 6 July, President Ram Nath Kovind announced the appointment of Thaawarchand Gehlot to the post.

Born on 18 May 1948 in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, Gehlot, a Dalit leader, graduated from Vikram University. He entered politics in 1962. He had been in charge of Karnataka between 2006 and 2014 when he was the general secretary of the party and hence Gehlot is well acquainted with it. Gehlot served as a Lok Sabha member from Shajapur from 1996 to 2009. He lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2009 and was sent to the Rajya Sabha in 2012. Although 83-year-old Vajubhai Vala completed his five-year term in August 2019, he remained in his post due to non-announcement of a new name by the Centre.
